Native Fish Stocking Program

Great news for our Castlereagh River with funding being secured for fish restocking.

“This is great news for our communities which are situated on the Castlereagh River, where the restock will occur”, said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Denis Todd. “By being a part of this program there will be many benefits for the Shire, including the enhancement of recreational freshwater fishing opportunities, support to local communities in the stocking of high value native fish species, and promoting the awareness of responsible stocking.”

This program is a Recreational Fishing Trust funded program which provides matching funds to stock native fish into rivers and dams across NSW. Warrumbungle Shire Council was successful in its application to take part in the Dollar for Dollar Native Fish Stocking Program, through the Department of Primary Industries (DPI).

“The recent successful application means we are looking to restock the newly dredged Coonabarabran Weir between December 2020 and May 2021. This will increase Golden Perch and Murray Cod numbers within the Castlereagh River,” said Cr Todd.

“The Coonabarabran Fishing Club have also been successful in applying for funding from the Dollar for Dollar program. Council is working with that club and the hatchery to coordinate the fingerling release,” concluded Cr Todd.
