Council welcomes Black Spot Program funding

Warrumbungle Shire Council has welcomed Black Spot Program funding for Warrumbungle Way announced last week.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack and Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton made the announcement of $400,000 for works on Warrumbungles Way.

Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Peter Shinton said, “works will take place West of Kurrajong Road at Binnaway. The works include shoulder improvements and the installation of w-beam barrier”.

Cr Shinton echoed calls for improved road safety across Warrumbungle Shire and the region reinforcing comments made by Mr Coulton around road accidents and the burden they place on our region. “Road accidents not only have an impact on our emergency services but also our daily travel. Most importantly though, they place incredible strain on friends and families and our local communities”, said Cr Shinton.

“It was great to hear that the Binnaway community was consulted and that they helped to identify some of the key road upgrades that will save lives in our Shire. There’s nothing like local knowledge from people who drive these roads every day in all conditions”, said Cr Shinton.

Road crashes are a major cost to Australians every year. Black Spot projects target road locations where crashes are occurring. By funding measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at dangerous locations, the program reduces the risk of crashes.

The Federal Government says that, programs of this sort are very effective, saving the community many times the cost of the relatively minor road improvements that are implemented.

The Black Spot Program makes an important contribution in reducing the national road toll under the National Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020.

Cr Shinton encouraged others communities across the Shire to nominate projects for funding in future rounds of the Black Spot Program. “If there is a road in the Shire that you think could be fixed under this program, please let them know. We want our residents and visitors to be as safe as possible when travelling on the roads in our Shire”.
