The NSW Government has announced its commitment to making public outdoor areas smoke free. Warrumbungle Shire Council playgrounds, public sports grounds and public swimming pools are already smoke free areas. NSW Government legislation will extend these smoke-free areas to include public transport stops, an area within 4m of entrances to public buildings, and commercial outdoor dining areas.
The Heart Foundation believes this to be an historic moment in NSW history and will help to protect the thousands of people in our State who do not smoke. Surveys by the Heart Foundation and Cancer Council have found that 94% of adults agree that playgrounds should be smoke free and 83% support smoke free outdoor dining.
Strong community support for a smoke free outdoors is supported by our Council. A survey of NSW café and restaurant owners/managers found that 82% think a smoking ban would create a much nicer environment for their customers, and eight out of ten café owners support NSW State legislation to enable implementation of smoke-free outdoor dining. Smoking is the largest single preventable cause of death in Australia, killing more than 15 000 Australians a year.
Warrumbungle Shire Council supports the NSW Government smoke-free outdoor legislation and ask for members of the public and restaurant/café owners to be aware of the smoke free outdoor areas policy. Further information may be found by contacting Council's Environmental Compliance Officer or by obtaining a copy of Councils Outdoor Smoke Free Areas Policy
