Warkton Bridge Replacement Project

The last fully timber constructed bridge in the Warrumbungle Shire is set to be replaced with the Warkton Bridge Replacement Project in full swing.

“Council has obtained a grant from the NSW Government under the Fixing Country Bridges (FCB) Program to replace Warkton Bridge,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Ambrose Doolan. “The FCB Program is specifically aimed at replacing timber bridges and Warkton Bridge is the last remaining bridge in the Shire that is fully constructed in timber.”

Tenders were called under a MOU with Walgett, Mid-Western and Lithgow Councils late last year with three (3) submissions were received for the Warkton Bridge project. The tender from Waeger Constructions was selected under the tender evaluation plan as the best value for the project. However, the tendered price and Council estimated costs exceeded the available project funding.

“In October 2021, Council resolved to reject all tenders for the replacement of the Warkton Bridge and resolved to enter into negotiations to gain extra funding and/or renegotiate the tender price so that the project can proceed within the funds available.”

Additional funding from TfNSW (Transport for NSW) has been advised as well as a further co-contribution from Roads to Recovery, bringing the total available funds for this project to $900,000.

“Council would like to thank both the Australia Government and the NSW Government for funding this project,” said Cr Doolan.

With the additional funding secured Waegers have submitted a new concept design and pricing for this project.

“Warkton Bridge is a relatively small bridge with a span of just 7 metres and a width of 5.1 metres. The replacement bridge will be constructed on the same road alignment and height however, the new bridge will have a span of 12 metres and a width of 6 metres,” Cr Doolan explained.

Construction is due to start May 2022 and the program requires the bridge to be completed by June 2023.
