Progress on the Newell Highway Upgrade at Coonabarabran

After receiving community submissions on the initial concept design of the Newell Highway upgrade at Coonabarabran, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) have now released a project update.

“The concept design for the Newell Highway upgrades have been completed with the proposed design being revised after TfNSW received 28 submissions from community members,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor Councillor Ambrose Doolan. “A submission report will be released mid-September 2021 to allow for the community to have their say on the revised plan.”

Cr Doolan and Council’s General Manager met with staff involved in the Newell Highway Upgrade Project in Coonabarabran to discuss the newly completed concept design and the next steps for this project.

“This project will roll out in two stages. The first stage will be the Newell/Oxley Highway intersection reprioritisation, which will see a detail design and construction, calling tenders for detail design in the coming months. Stage two will be the bypass details design and construction pending funding commitment,” Cr Doolan explained.

“To give the community a better understanding of the enormity of this project the timeline for the project is as follows: Commence detailed design Stage 1 early 2022; Final business case approved mid-2022; Complete detailed design early 2023; Call tenders mid-2023; Commence works Stage 1 early 2024; Open Stage 1 to traffic in the latter half of 2025.”

The NSW Government has committed $11.5 million for the planning of the Newell Highway upgrade at Coonabarabran. However, no funding for construction has been confirmed.
