Never too young to learn about recycling

Students from St Michaels School Dunedoo visited the Dunedoo Transfer Station to learn about recycling, why we do it and what happens with the cardboard, glass and plastic bottles that are collected.

“Council provided a guided tour of the Waste and Recycling Transfer Station in Dunedoo for students of all ages at St Michaels School, Dunedoo,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Ambrose Doolan. “The visit was part of the students extending their knowledge on waste and recycling and what happens after you place items in the bin.”

Waste Services are one of Council’s largest services provided to the community every day and it is important that the community understands the importance of recycling to minimise the waste ending up in landfill, which in turn will help the environment and prolong the life of waste depots.

“The children were very excited to see the cardboard press in action and had numerous questions on how it all worked. They were shown how the cardboard was pressed and at the end of the process how it came out in a bale,” said Cr Doolan.

“NetWaste had sent posters and gifts for the students to encourage them to be proactive in learning about waste and recycling. The children asked our Environment and Waste staff some wonderful questions and staff enjoyed sharing their knowledge with the younger generation.”

“The services provided by Council to our communities every day are run by local community members, so allowing a firsthand insight into the operations of Council is a wonderful way to strengthen this community connection,” Cr Doolan concluded.
