Mulching at tips

Reducing landfill and reusing waste products is an important function of Council’s waste facilities, not only for the obvious environmental benefits but also to reduce the fire risk of green waste stockpiles.

“Over the last few years Council has implemented an ongoing program to reuse green waste deposited at landfill and waste transfer stations,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Ambrose Doolan. “This program has seen stockpiles of green waste turned into useful, environmentally-friendly product.”

“The green waste is mulched into smaller sized particles, which are used at the transfer stations to cover and re-cap the old landfill layers. This repurposed product helps the old landfill to break down naturally and the mulch product poses no harm to the environment,” explained Cr Doolan.

“This is also a great initiative to reduce the risk of fire breaking out within landfill and waste transfer sites.”

Council engages a contractor to mulch all green waste stock piles at Mendooran, Baradine, Binnaway, Coolah and Dunedoo transfer stations, and the Coonabarabran landfill.

“It is important that Council looks to the future of our communities, reusing and repurposing products from waste facilities like this has benefits all-round,” concluded Cr Doolan.
