Disaster Resilience Project Commences

Preparation has now commenced for a disaster resilience strategy to be prepared and implemented throughout the Shire, this strategy will be driven by community consultation.

A disaster resilience strategy for Warrumbungle Shire Council will review existing infrastructure, particularly roads then look at the risks communities face as a result of natural disasters and consult with the community closely on how to improve and make these assets more resilient to these events.

“The Warrumbungle Local Government Area is prone to the impacts of natural hazards such as bushfires, floods and storms,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Ambrose Doolan. “We have over 2,500 kilometres of roads across our area that can be damaged in these types of events.”

“Community consultation is an important part of this project. Consultation will be carried out in communities across the Shire to obtain as much local knowledge as possible,” said Cr Doolan.

“We want to know that emergency services can use our roads in these events, and that our rural residents can access the services they need.”

Community consultation will be advertised across the Shire in local papers, on Council’s website and across social media platforms to ensure community are aware of when these consultations will occur. Times, dates and locations are yet to be confirmed.

Consultants, Water Technology Pty Ltd, have been commissioned to assist in conducting the background analysis and prepare the strategy.

The outcome of the project will be a Shire wide disaster resilience strategy that will look at the risks our communities face as a result of natural disasters, and how road infrastructure can be improved to make it more resilient to these events.

The project is funded through the Disaster Risk Reduction Fund (DRRF). The DRRF is jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales governments. “Council wishes to thank the Australian and NSW Government for funding the project. It is anticipated that the project will be completed in April 2024,” said Cr Doolan.
