Communities are set for a dry spell across the Warrumbungle Shire

With the weather warming up, and with minimal rainfall over the last few months, residents are urged to be water wise and conserve water.

“The extended weather forecast indicates dry conditions for the remainder of the year, making it vital for our residents to understand the importance of water conservation within our local communities,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Ambrose Doolan. “With summer coming we all need to be mindful of water use.”

“Timor Dam, Coonabarabran is currently sitting at 72% of capacity. Should the Dam fall to 70% then water restrictions will be introduced at Coonabarabran to assist with the reduction of water being used and conserve the town water supply,” said Cr Doolan.

“Water restrictions are put in place in line with the Drought Management Plan, which is available on the Council website.”

The community will be regularly updated when water restrictions come into place. It is important for community members to keep up to date on their town’s water situations, and all the information can be found on Council’s website under the ‘Water Restrictions Information’ on the home page.

“Council is constantly looking at ways to sustain water systems and supplies for our local communities. However, without regular rainfall supplied to some of Council’s water supply schemes the amount that can be drawn upon for our communities can become restricted, particularly as the bores do not produce high volumes of water and are able to supply only basic water levels in an emergency,” said Cr Doolan.

“Water is a very important part of our communities; however, it is not an unlimited resource. It is time to start thinking about what you are using water for and the amount of water you are consuming in your household and within businesses,” Cr Doolan concluded.
