Castlereagh River Rehabilitation Project

The Castlereagh River Rehabilitation is well under way in Coonabarabran with community members interested in the project encouraged to come along and find out more.

“This project will see the improvement of the health and ecological conditions of the Castlereagh River ecosystem in Coonabarabran,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Ambrose Doolan. “It will encourage community involvement, improve access to the river and increase awareness of the river ecology and its cultural significance.”

The work includes 2km of the Castlereagh River riverbank zone, in the town of Coonabarabran NSW. Areas of woody and soft stem weed will be removed and revegetated with local riparian grasses, shrubs and trees. A River Management Plan, instream habitat mapping and water monitoring have been completed. A cultural heritage study will be undertaken, a new path will be constructed and signage and waste traps will be installed.

A community information afternoon will be held at 12:30pm on 11 August 2023, at the Coonabarabran Council Offices in John Street, to share the results of the following activities:
• River rejuvenation plan
• Mapping of the river bed
• River health monitoring
• eDNA monitoring
• River habitat mapping

Council has received funding for the rehabilitation work from the Australian Government’s Murray–Darling Healthy Rivers Program.

“I would like to encourage all of those in our community who are interested in this project to come along and engage with this project that will see benefits for our local community for many years to come,” Cr Doolan concluded.

All are welcome to attend. Please RSVP to info@warrumbungle.nsw.gov.au

This project is supported by Council, the Community Project Group and Warrumbungle National Park Environmental Education Centre (WNPEEC).
