YOUTH WEEK 2024 NSW Youth Week is here, celebrating youth empowerment and creativity across the Warrumbungle Local Government Area from 11-21 April 2024. This year’s theme to ‘Express, Empower, Get Loud!” “Youth Week is a time to celebrate young people and the positive contributions they make to their communities,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Ambrose Doolan. “This year Warrumbungle Shire Council will be extending Youth Week events to cover the entire School holiday period with both Youth Week events and School Holiday events happening right across the Shire there will be something for everyone.” There will be a variety of activities and events available for children and young people. Some of the events include Bubble Soccer at Coolah, Dunedoo and Mendooran with Nerf Warz and Zorb Balls in Coonabarabran on Wednesday 24 April 2024. Art Workshops with proud Gamilaraay artist, Jodie Herden will be held in Neilson Park, Coonabarabran. A free Family Fun Day on Sunday 21 April 2024 at No 1 Oval, Coonabarabran will feature Arrow Tag, Inflatables and a BBQ lunch with a Family Movie Night being held at the Coonabarabran Sport and Recreation Centre on Tuesday 23 April 2024 at 6pm. Mendooran Central School is continuing the long tradition of their Touch Football event with a Staff Vs Students Vs Parents/Community match and BBQ on Friday 3 May 2024 while Coolah Central School’s Student Representative Council are organising a Karaoke Disco with a “Get Loud” theme. Macquarie Regional Libraries is also hosting school holidays and Youth Week events across the Coolah, Coonabarabran, Baradine and Dunedoo branches with activities such as Hand Weaving, Mandala Magic painting and Mindfulness for Kids. Baradine Library is also hosting a special presentation with history enthusiast, Evelyn Hampton on Thursday 2 May 2024. “As well as the events planned in the Warrumbungle LGA there will be online activities and competitions available for young people. These can be found on the Youth Week website www.nsw.gov.au/arts-and-culture/nsw-youth-week-2024/events,” said Cr Doolan. “Youth Week is a great opportunity for our community to celebrate young people and provides opportunities to share ideas, attend events, try new activities and have fun,” concluded Cr Doolan. The Youth Development Program is responsible for encouraging, engaging and empowering community youth across the shire. The Program strives for the continued enhancement of the long-term social, economic, and environmental conditions of their community.
The Youth Development program focusses on developing and building upon a culture of positive youth community capacity building through • working cohesively with the existing youth services across the shire • improving dialogue and best practice sharing between services • opening communication around service delivery • addressing wider community youth issues holistically • breaking down barriers around community perceptions and access • raising the positive profile of young people across the shire
2021 has proved to be a busy year for youth initiatives across the Shire with the availability due to Building Youth Pathways Drought Extension funding.
Initiatives have included: • December/January School Holiday Pool Movie nights in Coolah, Coonabarabran, Dunedoo and Mendooran and Pool float Event at Binnaway. • Regional Youth Leadership Program, facilitated by Heather Miller and Paris Mir from Youth Leadership Academy Australia. Workshops in both Coolah and Coonabarabran were attended by over 150 young people from Binnaway, Coolah, Coonabarabran, Dunedoo and Mendooran High Schools. Focusing on resilience, empowerment and leadership. • Active Citizenship Workshop, facilitated in partnership with Tanya Owen from Parramatta Council. The two day workshop focused on the power of active community citizenship and was attended by young people and adults from Coolah, Binnaway, Mendooran and Coonabarabran. • PCYC Safer Driver course in Coonabarabran and Coolah providing free access to young people across the Shire to gain practical skills, information and 20 log book hours upon completion of the course. • Funding from Festival of Place – Summer and National Youth Week 2021 was combined to allow for Drive in Movie nights to be held at Coolah and Coonabarabran. In addition the youth week theme of ‘Together More than Ever’ was on show at he various events across the shire including; - Intergenerational Comedy workshop held in Coonabarabran, - Mendooran Youth Vs Police vs Teachers Touch Footy competition - Multiple creative and sporting activities held at Coonabarabran High School - Eats and Beats Event was held at Coolah Central School for the whole school and parents with jumping castles, bungie runs, games, food and DJ Music. Coolah Eats and Beats Video Link. - ‘Celebrating Youth of the Warrumbungle’ banner flags were displayed in five towns and will be displayed annually during Youth Week and World Youth Day.
