Dave Smith, Senior Supervisor - Urban Services

From parks and playgrounds to sports fields, public toilets and cemeteries, Dave helps oversee the teams that keep our towns looking their best.

What are your main roles and responsibilities?
My main role is supervising the Urban Services teams across Warrumbungle Shire Council. I also project manage a range of Urban Services projects, helping to deliver improvements and maintain public spaces across the shire.

What's one thing people might be surprised to learn about your job or service?
The number of kilometres I travel each day to visit towns and villages across the Warrumbungle Shire. Covering such a large local government area means there's always plenty of time spent on the road.

What do you enjoy most about working for Warrumbungle Shire Council?
Working in all the different communities across the entire shire. Every town and village has its own character, and no two days are ever the same.

How does your role help our community?
Every tree I help plant and every piece of new infrastructure I help deliver is something the community can enjoy for years to come. It's rewarding to know I've had a hand in creating lasting improvements across the shire.

What's one thing you wish more people knew about your team or service?
The Urban Services teams carry out an incredible variety of jobs every single day. People often take for granted the empty bins, well maintained parks and clean public toilets, but there's a lot of work happening behind the scenes. Our crews are out early emptying bins, cleaning toilets, mowing parks, pruning trees, opening community halls, weeding garden beds, marking sports fields, rolling cricket pitches, collecting rubbish, cleaning barbecues, removing dead animals from roads and streets, and maintaining our cemeteries. It's a job that never really stops.

What's been one of your proudest moments working at Council?
The projects I'm most proud of are the playground upgrades I've project managed across the shire. The transformation has been incredible, and it's great to see our communities now enjoying modern, high quality playgrounds that families can use for years to come.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy woodworking and metalworking, spending time in the garden, and the simple things in life, like taking our dog for a walk.

What's one thing you love about the Warrumbungle Shire?
I love the diversity across the Warrumbungle Shire. Every town and village has its own unique character and personality, and that's something you don't often find in larger centres.
