Council advises the Coonabarabran community that the Castlereagh River downstream of the Horsley Street weir is now safe for recreational use.

Following a wastewater overflow into the Castlereagh River in late December 2025, Council undertook a comprehensive water quality sampling program to assess the affected area.

Results have confirmed that there is no residual contamination from the overflow event within the river.

A recreational water warning was issued on 30 December 2025 as a precautionary measure. Based on the latest sampling results, this warning has now been lifted, and water-based recreational activities can safely resume in the affected section of the river.

Council thanks the community for their patience and cooperation while testing and monitoring were carried out to ensure public safety.
