Draft Flying Australian Flag Policy

Warrumbungle Shire Council is inviting community feedback on the Draft Australian Flag Flying Policy.

This policy has been developed to ensure flags are displayed consistently, respectfully, and in line with official protocols across all Council-managed facilities. It also reflects feedback from previous community engagement undertaken during the development of the Community Strategic Plan, where community members expressed support for flying both the Australian National Flag and the Aboriginal Flag daily.

Submissions close 4:30pm, Wednesday 6 May 2026.

What does the policy do?

The policy outlines clear guidelines for:

• The correct display and positioning of flags
  
• When flags should be flown, including special events and observances
• When flags should be flown at half-mast
• Recognition of important cultural dates, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander observances
• Staff responsibilities for flag management

The policy applies to all Council-managed facilities and is relevant to the wider community.

What is the intended outcome?

The policy ensures flags are displayed in a respectful and consistent way, supports compliance with national guidelines, and helps avoid incorrect or inappropriate use.

What happens next?

The Policy will be reviewed and considered by Warrumbungle Shire Council after the public exhibition period ends. Any feedback received will be evaluated before proceeding to formal adoption at a future Council meeting.
