Golden Highway a Key Link in the Central West

The Golden Highway is a key link for freight travelling from the Central West region to the Hunter region and ultimately to the Port of Newcastle.

The Golden Highway Draft Corridor Strategy has been identified as a key priority for development of NSW State Infrastructure and provides an overview of the state government’s long-term management and vision for the highway to improve safety, traffic efficiency and freight access.

Priorities in the Golden Highway Corridor Strategy highlight the construction of overtaking lanes, truck parking bays, heavy vehicle inspection sites and upgrades to intersections.

Prepared by the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) in collaboration with Transport for NSW, public feedback was received earlier in 2016.

Providing wider lanes, sealed shoulders and wide clear zones will improve road safety.  Upgrading intersections to provide turn bays and acceleration lanes, together with overtaking lanes and climbing lanes in sections of steep terrain, will go towards accommodating the increasing number of heavy vehicles using this vital road corridor through the central west.

Improving the road surface to reduce ongoing maintenance costs together with heavy vehicle parking bays and rest areas will also enhance the viability of the road corridor as a freight route for the mining and agriculture industries.

General Manager of Warrumbungle Shire Council, Steve Loane, welcomed the progress of the Golden Highway  Draft Road Corridor strategy.

“Council road operations crews undertake maintenance and construction work on the Golden Highway under contract with the RMS,” commented Mr Loane.

“This work creates jobs for our region, enabling Council to employ road crews and generate income in the Warrumbungle Shire.

“Recently our road crews have been installing guard rails along the Golden and Castlereagh Highways as part of the RMS contract works.”
