Drivers reminded to be careful with schools returning this week

The School Holidays are coming to an end and schools in Warrumbungle Shire will begin to return from this week with the school year starting on Tuesday, 29 January 2019 in the Eastern Division and Tuesday, 5 February 2019 in the Western Division.

“The return of school also means the return of 40km per hour school zones”, said Warrumbungle Shire Council Road Safety Officer, Cheyenne O’Brien.

“School zones are in place between the hours of 8:00am - 9:30am and 2:30pm – 4:00pm each weekday. The 40km per hour school zone is in place to increase the chance of survival where the risk of pedestrians being hit is higher”, Ms O’Brien said.

“With schools returning there will be an increased number of pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles near or on our roads during peak times. Children are more susceptible to road crashes due to their size, inability to judge speed and distance as well as their unpredictable actions and drivers need to be aware of this and pay extra attention when travelling around schools”, she said.
“Road crashes account for 58% of all accidental deaths among children aged 5-14 years of age”, said Ms O’Brien.

Ms O’Brien explained, “school zones are not the only place where drivers need to pay extra attention as students and pedestrians also gather at bus stops on the side of roads”.

“Drivers are also required to slow down to 40km per hour around buses that are stopped and have flashing wig-wag lights on. The flashing lights are used to indicate to drivers that there are students about and that they need to slow down and pay extra attention when passing by.”

“It is the whole community’s responsibility to ensure that students travel safely to and from school each day .Parents and guardians need to regularly reinforce road safety rules to children, and drivers need to slow down and pay extra attention near bus stops and school zones”, Ms O’Brien said.
