Council helps to drive a locally led recovery

Warrumbungle Shire is kicking goals in the wake of 18 months of natural disasters, with the hard work of the community and leadership of Council restoring financial stability and helping to create new local jobs.

Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Ambrose Doolan said this week (August 2-8) was Local Government Week, a time to acknowledge the hard work of councils and raise awareness of the support and services they offered their communities.

The theme of this year’s Local Government Week is “Locally Led”; a celebration of how councils and their communities stood shoulder to shoulder to stave off a range of disasters in the past year-and-a-half, weathered the storm together and are now on the road to recovery, Cr Doolan said.

“Councils demonstrated over this time that no level of government knows the needs of their communities better than local government, and given the proper financial support from our State and Federal counterparts we can provide a locally led economic recovery and create new jobs too.

“Our Council is a part of this drive, responding to the events of 2020/2021 by maintaining existing jobs, providing opportunities to our younger people with our School-Based Traineeship program, and keeping money pumping through the local economy.

“We also facilitated ‘Upskilling Local Businesses’ including workshops, webinars and consultation, and Agri-Tourism Business workshops to assist small businesses. Along with theses workshops there was also campaigns encouraging people to spend locally.

“The ongoing impacts of COVID have ensured that we are not out of the woods yet, but thanks to our passionate community, the financial support of the State and Commonwealth and our hard-working council staff, our future is assured and our prospects are strong.

“Councils really do punch above their weight, especially when it comes to getting the most out of funding dollars.

“It is absolutely critical that local government continues to receive Federal and State support for projects that will help us sustain our local economy, keep people in jobs and keep local businesses in business.”
