Coonabarabran Emergency Water Supply – Bart Bok bore is now online

In positive news for the Coonabarabran community the Bart Bok emergency water supply bore is now online and available to provide water into the system.

“For the past seven (7) months Council has been working to provide a secure and sustainable water supply for the Coonabarabran Township,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Peter Shinton. “We are extremely pleased to now say that the bore situated near Bart Bok Bridge is now online. This is another step closer to having the entire emergency water supply system up and running.”

“We are extremely grateful for the NSW State Government funding, as well as the assistance and support, which has gone a long way to fund the whole emergency water scheme which includes six (6) emergency bores and other infrastructure. It is expected that the emergency water supply system will be able to produce enough water to meet the current and foreseeable demand,” said Councillor Shinton.

Council has worked closely with the NSW Government, in particular the Department of Industry – Water and Public Work Advisory. Council has also engaged a hydrogeologist to undertake a range of tests as well as geophysical logging of all the bore holes. With this advice Council has avoided any aquifers that are already being accessed by private bores previously approved by the Department of Industry – Water.

“The Water Treatment Plant in Coonabarabran is currently receiving water from a total of six (6) bores,” said Councillor Shinton.

”The new bores have taken a great deal of pressure off our reliance on Timor Dam.”

”The level of Timor Dam remains very low at around 22%”and there is no significant rainfall on the horizon. Unfortunately this means that we must continue to watch our water use and water restrictions cannot be lifted just yet,” said Councillor Shinton.

“While having an emergency water system online is excellent, it doesn’t replace the need for water in the Timor dam.”

Councillor Shinton concluded by saying, “Council is committed to completing the emergency system in the coming months.”
