What is an eligible container for the Container Deposit Scheme

The Container Deposit System is a great way to recycle for the environment and earn some dollars at the same time, but it is important to know which containers are eligible for refund on return.

“We are very lucky to have two Container Deposit processing locations across the Warrumbungle local government area (LGA), in Coonabarabran and Dunedoo,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Ambrose Doolan. “It is important that people who are using this service are only taking eligible containers to be processed.”

Most beverage containers of aluminum, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard, between 150ml and 3L are eligible for the 10c refund. The easiest way to identify an eligible container is to check for refund mark which makes it easy to see containers that can be deposited through the Container Deposit Scheme.

Containers smaller than 150ml or bigger than 3L are not eligible for the container deposit. Ineligible containers include plain milk containers, glass that contained wine or spirits, large (1L or more) flavoured milk containers, pure juice, cask wine or water, cordial or vegetable juice containers, wine sachets above 250ml, and registered health tonics. Even though these containers are ineligible for the Container Deposit Scheme residents are encouraged to still recycle these containers through Council’s kerbside yellow recycle bins.

“It’s great to see so many people across the region using the Container Deposit Schemes in the Warrumbungle LGA. Last year there were over 2 million containers deposited at the Container Deposit Scheme processes centres. Let’s keep recycling and make sure you only take eligible containers,” Cr Doolan concluded.
