Martin Reserve, Coonabarabran

The reserve on the corner of Gordon Street and Hill Street in Coonabarabran has officially been renamed as Martin Reserve.

“In October 2021 Council resolved to seek community feedback on a proposal to rename Gordon Street Reserve,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Ambrose Doolan. “At the February Ordinary Council Meeting 2022, Council considered the community feedback and endorsed the process of officially naming Crown Reserve No R86082 on the corner of Gordon Street and Hill Street in Coonabarabran as Martin Reserve.”

“Martin Reserve” was proposed in recognition of the Martin family, a well-respected family in Coonabarabran who built and owned a well-known small business in town for many years, the ‘Handee Store.’

The submission went on to say that “Graham Martin was an active founding Coonabarabran band member and was also in the original White Rose Orchestra,” Cr Doolan explained.

The Geographical Names Board has the role of assigning names to places and natural features. It considers place naming applications and makes recommendations to the Minister and the Board notified Council that the name, Martin Reserve, was officially assigned in the NSW Government Gazette on 15 July 2022.

“An appropriate unveiling ceremony and installation of signage will be coordinated with the Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council,” Cr Doolan concluded.
