Increased Security for Coonabarabran’s Water Supply

Coonabarabran’s water supply has become more secure with tenders for a new 8km long groundwater pipeline being accepted by Warrumbungle Shire Council.

“The new groundwater pipeline will serve as a backup water supply main if there is a break or outage in the main line running from Timor Dam, allowing water to continue to be supplied to residents,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor Councillor Ambrose Doolan. “This is an important addition to ensure a secure water supply to Coonabarabran.”

The pipeline will be dedicated to running water from the existing bores along Timor Road into the Water Treatment Plant. The bores were installed as a backup water supply during the recent devastating drought.

Funding from the NSW Government through the Drought Stimulus Package will allow this $2.2M project to go ahead, securing a sustainable supply of water for Coonabarabran.

“This project is expected to be completed before the end of 2021 and the presence of contractors during the construction phase is expected to boost the local economy.”

“After the severe drought NSW has encountered, it is important that we secure our water infrastructure ensuring water supply for the future,” concluded Cr Doolan.

At the March Ordinary Council Meeting, the tender for this project was awarded to Chiverton Estates P/L trading as Thompson Irrifab.
