Fluoridation for potable water supplies is progressing

Funding has now been confirmed by NSW Health to reinstate a water fluoridation plant in Coolah and discussions continue on the funding for the other four (4) sites across the Shire.

“With support and funding from NSW Health, works to reinstate the fluoridation systems in Coolah is now going ahead,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Ambrose Doolan. “$130,000 has been provided by NSW to pay for the full cost of reinstating the fluoridation plant.”

“With continued discussions a pathway to establish fluoride at the remaining four (4) sites, Baradine, Binnaway, Coonabarabran and Mendooran, will be looked at in the coming months.”

“Fluoridation of potable water supplies were ceased due to design faults in the dosing system. This is a design fault that has affected many small water treatment plants across NSW. A new fluoridation system has been developed and has received approval from both NSW Health and the Department of Planning, Infrastructure and Environment,” explained Cr Doolan.

“It will be great to see these upgrades come to life as the community has brought this topic to light, particularly at Community Consultation Meetings, to say that this is an important issue,” Cr Doolan explained.

“The fluoridation plants in Baradine and Binnaway have been off-line since January 2017 and the fluoridation in Coonabarabran was discontinued in December 2015. Due to the problems that were occurring with design failures, plants in Coolah and Mendooran have not been operated since fluoride dosing systems were installed,” said Cr Doolan. “Dunedoo’s water supply has naturally occurring fluoride and does not require a fluoridation plant.”

“We are grateful for the support from NSW Health to get to this stage and look forward to their continuing support to complete the upgrades,” Cr Doolan concluded.
