Fluoridation for potable water supplies

Upgrading of the water fluoridation plants across the Warrumbungle Shire is continuing with support from NSW Health.

“Fluoridation of potable water supplies was ceased due to design faults in the dosing system” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Ambrose Doolan. “With the support of NSW Health Council has been working on reinstating fluoridation systems of its potable water supplies.”

“The fluoridation plants in Baradine and Binnaway have been off-line since January 2017 and the fluoridation in Coonabarabran was discontinued in December 2015. Due to the problems that were occurring with design failures, plants in Coolah and Mendooran have not been operated since fluoride dosing systems were installed,” said Cr Doolan. “Dunedoo’s water supply has naturally occurring fluoride and does not require a fluoridation plant.”

“It will be great to see these upgrades come to life as the community has brought this topic to light, particularly at Community Consultation Meetings, to say that this is an important issue,” Cr Doolan explained.

“NSW Health has agreed to fund 100% of the fluoridation upgrades, which will see fluoride extended to Baradine, Binnaway, Coolah, Coonabarabran and Mendooran. Works will progress when that funding commitment is made in writing,” said Cr Doolan.

“At this stage, a new fluoridation system has been developed and has received approval from both NSW Health and the Department of Planning, Infrastructure and Environment. Once funding from NSW has been confirmed, the next step will be to call for tenders to design and construct the upgrade of the five plants,” explained Cr Doolan.

“We are grateful for the support from NSW Health to get to this stage and look forward to their continuing support to complete the upgrades,” Cr Doolan concluded.
