Cracking down on illegal dumping

Illegal dumping across the Warrumbungle Shire local government area remains a problem and Council is asking the community to help put it to a stop. 

Council has commenced a new initiative to target illegal dumping with assistance from the NSW Environment and Protection Authority (EPA). 

“This new program aims to clean up our communities and follows on from the insight into illegal dumping gained through a recent study carried out by Council,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Ambrose Doolan. “This initiative will allow Council’s Compliance Officers to identify more illegal dumping hotspot areas, with the help from the community, and take further action against persons found to be dumping rubbish.”

Council already regularly patrols identified hotspot areas for illegal dumping but through this program community members can also identify hotspots by entering identified areas and incidents into the EPA’s database, allowing Council’s Compliance Officers to add these areas to their regular patrols. 

“Council is encouraging the community to get on board and dob in a dumper to help out with this great initiative,” said Cr Doolan. 

To get involved, anyone with a smart device or camera can help clean up the community by taking a photo of the dumped waste and uploading the image to ridonline.epa.nsw.gov.au. You can do this while at the area of the dumped waste so that the GPS location will automatically upload, or if you are off-site you can enter the incident address.

“We already know that there are dumping hotspots in the LGA but more data will help add to the bigger picture of problem areas. So as part of this initiative, let’s work together to put a stop to illegal dumping,” Cr Doolan concluded.

Council’s participation in targeting illegal dumping is thanks to the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, Waste Less Recycle More initiative funded from the NSW Waste Levy.
