Cleaning up our waste

Waste depots in the Warrumbungle Shire area are clearing out their scrap metal stockpiles in a bid to ensure improvements and growth in Warrumbungle Waste.

“Warrumbungle Waste have been cleaning up the local waste depots and found that one of the bulkiest items collected at the depots is scrap metal,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor Ambrose Doolan. “This scrap metal is now being removed from Council waste depots allowing for improvements to be made and to increase capacity.”

“The scrap metal material was offered for sale through an expression of interest process. A number of scrap metal merchants expressed an interest with material being sold as price per tonne and transported to market. The proceeds of the sale of the material will be invested back into Warrumbungle Waste, allowing further improvements to be made to Council’s waste facilities,” said Cr Doolan.

“The successful contractor has now commenced removal of scrap metal from Coonabarabran Waste and Recycling Centre and will move onto waste transfer stations in Baradine, Binnaway, Mendooran, Coolah, Dunedoo and Ulamambri over the coming weeks. The contractor is pressing the material into bales and loading onto trucks for transport to markets,” Cr Doolan said.

The work commenced in Coonabarabran in October 2020 and will move to collect from all waste sites in the Council area over a couple of weeks, finishing up in November 2020.
