Be a responsible animal owner over the holiday season

The holiday season is a busy time for everyone but we must not forget about our pets and livestock.

“There are many pets and livestock in our Council area and this is a reminder for owners that holidays can be stressful for animals, so now is a good time to think about your pet’s welfare”, said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Ambrose Doolan. “High volumes of visitors, loud noises and parties mean it is important for residents to look after their animals ensuring we all have a great holiday season.”

“With all the activities, excitement, fireworks and summer storms animals can become overwhelmed and do tend to wander from their home and paddocks. It is important that all animal owners have secure fences and gates to ensure pets cannot escape when distressed”, said Cr Doolan.

“The best way to ensure your pets are safe when you go away is to have someone looking after them at home in the holidays. This way you are sure your pets are getting fresh food, water, regular exercise, don’t go wandering and are safe in their own environment.”

“If you are travelling with pets, make sure they are restrained safely in the car or on the ute and be mindful of hot temperatures inside your car or on ute trays,” Cr Doolan explained.

“With families traveling during this time and leaving their livestock on properties it is also important to ensure all paddock fences, especially boundary fences, are in good condition ensuring livestock cannot wander. Also, making sure each paddock has sufficient water and feed is important.”

“Holidays are great fun but ensuring everyone, including our animals, is safe and looked after is important,” concluded Cr Doolan.
