Acting to Safeguard Our Sewer System

Is Your Property Contributing to Stormwater Issues? Council’s New Flyer Helps Residents Identify Sanitary Drainage Problems.

“Council is encouraging residents in Coonabarabran—and across towns with sewerage systems in the shire—to understand and address potential issues with their sanitary drainage, said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Kathryn Rindfleish. “A newly prepared information flyer has been developed to help residents identify possible problems and educate the wider community about the importance of preventing stormwater from entering the town’s sewer system.”

The simple checklist provided in the flyer empowers residents to assess their domestic sanitary drainage and determine whether any defects may lead to stormwater inflow. This initiative follows a 2017/2018 smoke testing project, which revealed that 825 properties across Coolah, Dunedoo, and Coonabarabran had defective connections. Many of these issues stemmed from sanitary drainage that did not comply with the Drainage and Plumbing Standards AS/NZS 3500, with some defects contributing to stormwater entering Council’s sewer system.

“Council has already taken steps to address these findings, sending letters to residents in Coolah and Dunedoo. Notifications will soon be sent to property owners with high-priority defects in Coonabarabran to ensure action is taken where necessary,” Cr Rindfleish explained.

This flyer provides background on the project and highlights the fact that many residents are unaware that stormwater and sewer systems are entirely separate infrastructure. Through this initiative, Council aims to raise awareness and motivate residents to review their sanitary drainage, thereby helping to maintain the integrity of the town’s sewer system.

“Residents are encouraged to take time to review the checklist and consider whether their properties may be at risk of contributing to unnecessary stormwater inflow. Together, we can protect and maintain the sewerage systems that keep our towns clean and functional, Cr Rindfleish concluded.
