A Family Day Care Scheme is a network of experienced and registered carers who provide care for other people's children in their own homes.
Carers have been carefully selected and supervised, and operate under the Children's Services Regulation 2004. Carers and Scheme Units have also been through the Accreditation process as set out by the National Childcare Accreditation Council. Children aged between the age of 6 weeks and 12 years are nurtured in a small group setting and through the Carers individualised programming, are encouraged to further develop their skills and knowledge.

Each individual Family Day Care service provider (carer) is registered with a Family Day Care Co-Ordination Unit. There are 105 Family Day Care Co-Ordination units throughout metropolitan, rural and remote NSW. Co-ordination units are grouped into regions based on geographical location or common interest. There are 15 regions within NSW, each of which have two representatives whose role includes; to act on their regions behalf at Board of Management meetings, to take information relating to broader issues back to their region and to act as a resource person for other schemes within their region.
