Driver Fatigue and the NewellLast modified: June 14, 2007 - 12:42 AM
The Newell Highway is 1055 kilometres in length in New South Wales and runs from the townships of Boggabilla/Goondiwindi on the Queensland border to Tocumwal on the Victorian border. The highway is very much the lifeline for the people living in Western and South Western New South Wales. The Newell Highway carries goods to the markets, brings goods and services to the region, and carries people to and from work and school and holiday makers across the state. It is also the major transport link between Melbourne and Brisbane. Driver fatigue is a significant problem on the Newell Highway. In the 5 year period between 1998-2002 there were 35 people killed and 188 people injured on the Newell Hwy. Fatigue was a factor in 24.5% of casualties and accounts for 18.9% (239) of all crashes. These crashes often involve local people from towns located on the Newell Highway. The financial and social impact on the community associated with a driver fatigue crash can be extremely devastating especially in the small communities where everyone knows everyone. Many of the towns and villages on the Newell Highway have small populations. Download document Contact details |
