Public Meeting on the Newell Highway Upgrade

To ensure that residents are aware of the proposal to upgrade the Newell Highway, including a proposal to By-Pass Coonabarabran, Council will be holding a public meeting at the Coonabarabran Town Hall.‚Äč

The NSW Roads and Maritime Services has stated that it is planning for a future upgrade of the Newell Highway at Coonabarabran to improve access and traffic flow. Three corridor options have been proposed, the first along the existing route and two out of town, effectively by-passing Coonabarabran. The RMS believes that upgrading the Newell Highway at Coonabarabran would support freight movement and improve travel safety and efficiency for road users.

“While the RMS have already held four feedback sessions in Coonabarabran the Council feels that there has not been enough discussion on the proposal of the Newell Highway upgrade” said Warrumbungle Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Denis Todd. “As a result Council has decided to hold a Public Meeting at the Coonabarabran Town Hall to discuss the issue and help make people aware of the proposal.”

“Council also wants to make people aware that feedback must be received at the RMS by 13 June 2019” said Councillor Todd.

“The options being proposed by RMS include Option 1 which involves the upgrade of the existing route through Coonabarabran. This option has two sub options that involve the RMS spending up to an estimated $69 million on upgrading the existing route through Coonabarabran.”

“Options 2 and 3 propose a by-passing of Coonabarabran, both on the eastern side of the township. These options have an estimated expenditure of between $136 million and $144 million.”

“The RMS believe that the upgrade of the Newell Hwy is necessary due to Coonabarabran being a ‘pinch point’ and also wanting the Newell Highway to be used by B-Triple trucks for the full length of the Highway.”

“Should the RMS choose to use a by-pass option then this will remove an estimated 700 heavy vehicles from passing through town along with removing passenger vehicles as well. There are both positives and negatives to this proposal” said Councillor Todd.

“To allow some further discussion on the proposed upgrade Warrumbungle Shire Council will be holding a public meeting to allow community discussion.”

“I do need to emphasise that the proposed Newell Highway upgrade is not a Council operational issue, however Council does have an opportunity to make a submission” said Councillor Todd.

“The meeting shall be held on Tuesday 11 June 2019 from 6.00pm to 7.30pm at the Coonabarabran Town Hall to discuss important issue.”

“Members of the public not able to attend are invited to email ideas and suggestions to Council at info@warrumbungle.nsw.gov.au or directly to the RMS newell.upgrade@rms.nsw.gov.au” concluded Councillor Todd.
