Getting the pools ready for the new season

With less than four weeks to go before the pools re-open, Council staff have been busy preparing the swimming pools across Warrumbungle Shire for the new season.

With a pool in each town, Council currently owns and operates six pools throughout the Shire. Over the winter months, when the swimming pools are closed, maintenance and repair works are undertaken, as well as any upgrades.

Warrumbungle Shire Council Director Technical Services, Kevin Tighe, said “the Winter works which have taken place this year have included replacing expansion joints, fixing pipes, replacing tiles and checking pumps.”

“During this off season, a disabled chair lift has also been installed at the Coolah swimming pool. This means that there are now three pools across the Shire, Coolah, Coonabarabran and Baradine, with disabled chair lifts to improve access for people to local pools”, said Mr Tighe.

Mr Tighe continued, “all the pools, except for the pool at Dunedoo, have been emptied to enable the works to be carried out. This has also allowed for the swimming pool surfaces to be cleaned and algae build up to be removed. At Dunedoo the water in the pool was specially treated with acid throughout winter to prevent the formation of algae.”

“Each pool that has been emptied will be re-filled with town water over the coming weeks. With Level 6 water restrictions still in place in Coonabarabran many different options have been considered regarding the filling of the Coonabarabran pool”.

“After taking everything in to consideration it was decided that the Coonabarabran swimming pool will be filled with a combination of water from the town supply and a bore at the rear of the Visitor Information Centre. The filling of the pool in Coonabarabran is estimated to take 7 to 10 days,” said Mr Tighe.

Mr Tighe continued, “Council is expecting that all the pools will be popular again this year with people using the pools for recreation, community fitness programs, learn to swim lessons as well as competition swimming. I encourage everyone to visit your local pool and find out about the programs and activities on offer throughout the swim season.”

Public Swimming Pools throughout the Warrumbungle Shire will open on Monday, 1 October 2018 with the season continuing through to Sunday, 31 March 2019. For fees, forms and other information on public swimming pools, visit Council’s website.
