Council welcomes North West Equestrian Expo competitors to Coonabarabran

With Expo time here again Warrumbungle Shire Council is extending a warm welcome to everyone coming to Coonabarabran this weekend.

“The Expo, now in its’ 28th year is one of biggest events each year for the Coonabarabran community”, said Warrumbungle Shire Council’s Manager Economic Development and Tourism, Aileen Bell.

As well as being one of the biggest events in Coonabarabran, the Expo is one of the largest equestrian events outside the Sydney Royal Easter Show, attracting school teams from the length of the Eastern seaboard as well as from Southern Queensland.

“In 2018 more than 400 horses have been entered to compete in events ranging from the One Day Event, Polocrosse, Team Penning, Showjumping, Pentathlon and Sporting to Dressage” said Ms Bell.

While large events always take a lot of planning, this year the Expo Committee were faced with an additional challenge – the lack of water in Coonabarabran.

With Coonabarabran on Level 6 water restrictions there were concerns about the amount of water required to service the Expo and the dependence on the town water supply.

“After consultation with Council, the Expo Committee have been given access to alternative water sources to ensure that the event goes ahead but doesn’t impact too heavily on the town water supply, said Ms Bell.

Ms Bell said, “there was no way we didn’t want the event to go ahead so Council and the Expo Committee got together and a plan has been put in place to ensure that there is an adequate water for the horses and the competitors”.

The North West Equestrian Expo runs from Friday, 1 June – Tuesday, 5 June 2018. Visit the website at http://www.nwequestrianexpo.com.au for more information, including a full program.
